Support for Holocaust Survivors When They Need It Most
JFS serves 294 low-income Holocaust survivors throughout the state of Connecticut. In addition to the common challenges of aging and loss of independence, survivors carry lifelong trauma related to hunger, displacement, and deprivation from the war and post-war years.
As survivors continue to age, they become increasingly vulnerable – often one injury, illness, or personal tragedy away from food insecurity. JFS provides trauma-informed, compassionate support through the Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry, kosher meal delivery program, home care, and case management – helping survivors age with dignity and remain safely in their homes. Below are just a few stories from the survivors we serve through our kosher meal delivery program.
Inge and her husband Leo both became very ill in the fall of 2025 and were unable to leave their home. Earlier that year, they had lost their son, David, and had no one else to turn to for help. Inge shared that the kosher meals delivered by JFS were the only reason they were able to survive.
Ella began receiving kosher meal deliveries after a hand injury prevented her from cooking. She learned about JFS from other residents in her building, who assured her that JFS staff would help. Ella continues to receive support through the Holocaust Survivor Program and food pantry.
One client family shared, “Sometimes we can’t go outside for groceries, and caregivers or our daughter are not available and we do not want to bother them. We just get those meals out, warm them, and we have a full dinner! Thank you JFS for signing us up, it helps us tremendously.”
