Reading to your children or grandchildren is a great way to teach compassion and instill the importance of helping others. Here are three of our go-to books for discussing food insecurity with kids:

  1. Saturday at the Food Pantry (Ages 3-7): As their cupboards grow bare, Molly and her mom visit a local food pantry. There, Molly runs into a classmate who is ashamed to use the pantry. Molly resolves to show her classmate that everyone needs a little help sometimes.
  2. Maddi’s Fridge (Ages 5-9): Best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, but the contents of their cabinets and fridges couldn’t be more different. Maddi is embarrassed that her family doesn’t have enough food and begs Sofia not to tell anyone. Should Sofia keep her promise or help her friend?
  3. Lulu and the Hunger Monster (Ages 5-9): A costly car problem causes the Hunger Monster to reappear in Lulu’s home—something her family doesn’t discuss with friends and neighbors. Can Lulu defeat the Hunger Monster without telling anyone?
