SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health First Aid is designed to help young people and the adults who care about them recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges and respond with appropriate resources. JFS offers different versions of this program: \nYouth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) teaches adults to recognize mental health issues in youth ages 12-18. This course is recommended for parents\, educators\, and anyone else who regularly works with this age group. Groups and individuals are welcome to participate. \nTeen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) teaches teens in grades 9-12 (ages 14-18) how to identify\, understand\, and respond to mental health and substance use issues among friends and peers. This course is recommended for classes\, youth groups\, and teen community organizations. \nAdult Mental Health First Aid (aMHFA) teaches adults to recognize the warning signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge or crisis among adult family members\, friends\, coworkers\, neighbors\, and more. Additional gifts help sustain JFS’s full range of programs and services\, allowing us to respond wherever the need is greatest. \nJoin us on November 12 and be part of a community coming together to respond to this growing need. \nFollow JFS on Facebook and Instagram for additional event updates beginning in September. \n\n\n\nOn any given day at the Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry\, you might meet an older adult whose pantry visit means they don’t have to choose between groceries and medication. A family rebuilding after a layoff upended their finances. A Holocaust survivor choosing ingredients to prepare a beloved family recipe. Or a Muslim mother selecting kosher foods that align with her family’s halal dietary needs. \n\n\nThese are just a few examples of the many people who turn to JFS for support each year. While their stories are different\, every client is welcomed with compassion and respect. And as food costs remain high and economic uncertainty grows\, more neighbors are turning to JFS to feed their families.

SUMMARY:Passover Food Drive + Distribution
DESCRIPTION:Each spring\, Elayne and James Schoke Jewish Family Service of Fairfield County and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty invite JFS of Greater Hartford to participate in a massive kosher-for-Passover bulk food distribution.  \nOur JFS staff drive a truck to Stamford and fill it with tons of potatoes\, onions\, matzah\, and other fixings for a perfect Seder. Then we drive back to Hartford\, where dozens of volunteers help us sort and repack the food into family-size grocery bags for distribution to JFS clients.  \nYou can volunteer as an individual or a group or donate matzah or other staples in the lead-up to Passover (see our Pantry Picks program). \n

DESCRIPTION:Help bring a Thanksgiving meal to a neighbor’s table.\n \nThanksgiving is a time to gather\, share a meal\, and appreciate the people who make our lives brighter. But for families struggling to afford everyday groceries\, a holiday meal may be beyond their means. \nOne JFS client\, working five jobs to make ends meet\, received a turkey and side dishes that provided meals well beyond Thanksgiving. Their words capture the difference your generosity makes: \n“I am so overwhelmed by gratitude\, awe\, and joy…thank you for helping others\, even when you don’t know who they are.” \nEach year\, JFS provides local families with turkeys\, spices\, and all the sides needed to enjoy this cherished holiday tradition. Through a donation\, a turkey drop-off\, or a few hours of volunteering\, you can help a neighbor share in that tradition and feel the care of their community. \nThis Thanksgiving\, turn your gratitude into a feast\, and give a family one more reason to give thanks. \n3 Ways to Support Your Neighbors This Thanksgiving\n\nSponsor a Thanksgiving bag: Our Thanksgiving Drive in partnership with The Crown Market provides a family with kosher Thanksgiving essentials for just a $30 donation. To sponsor a bag\, visit our donation page or look for the poster at the Crown Market\, located at 2471 Albany Avenue in West Hartford. Plus\, thanks to a generous matching program made possible by the Rosenberg family\, every $30 donation towards a Thanksgiving bag will unlock an additional $30 to support wraparound services at JFS that promote each family’s overall well-being.\n \n\nDonate a turkey: Bring a turkey to Beth El Temple on Sunday\, November 22 between 9 a.m. and noon to help us meet our goal of feeding 400 families. Kosher turkeys are our greatest need\, but we will gladly accept any turkey to the flock! Beth El Temple is located at 2626 Albany Avenue in West Hartford.\n\nVolunteer your time: Our Thanksgiving distribution is not possible without the incredible work of our volunteers. DESCRIPTION:Each year throughout the month of July\, JFS holds a Back-to-School Drive to collect backpacks and selected school supplies for clients and their families. Upward of 175 backpacks are distributed in August\, just before the school year begins. There are several ways to support the drive:\n \n\nDonate: Donate online or mail a check\, and we’ll purchase the supplies that are needed most. If mailing a check\, please write “Back-to-School Drive” in the memo line.\nShop Locally: Purchase supplies and drop them off at our office: 333 Bloomfield Ave Suite A\, West Hartford.\nShop our Wish List: Purchase supplies online through our Amazon wish list and have them shipped directly to JFS.\n\nThis drive is sponsored by S&S Worldwide and supported through partnerships with the Mandell JCC and PJ Library in Greater Hartford.  \nCorporate\, family\, and individual sponsors are welcome.
